I’ve lived in the Maritimes my whole life so I know that our summer is short and the fog rolls in fast! We always have to be prepared for a quick change in the weather especially in Halifax, a city right on the edge of the ocean!
There’s nothing like eating lobster mac & cheese while watching the sailboats drift by and the the fog roll in to cover Georges Island. It’s like being in a pirate movie! Being prepared with a sweater is important, but I REALLY don’t want to miss out on even one night of patio season, so it’s also important for me to have a few favourite pubs and restaurants up my sleeve that I know are going to have extra supplies on hand to keep me warm. Here are five of my go to patios for chilly weather in Downtown Halifax:
The Bicycle Thief
There really is nothing quite so enjoyable as sitting on the patio at The Bicycle Thief, right at the water’s edge watching the people walk down the boardwalk and the ships sail past.
It’s a great location for a special dinner out and is often a little more quiet since it’s near one end of the board walk at Bishop’s Landing. The food is exquisite and I wouldn’t be remiss in saying it’s probably my favourite restaurant in Halifax.
On a cold night they have red fleece blankets that just happen to match the decor of the restaurant so you look lovely in them at all times while snuggling in to keep warm against the incoming fog.
Ristorante a Mano
Just across the way, also located in Bishop’s Landing, is the sister restaurant to The Bicycle Thief, aMano. It’s well known for it’s exceptional Italian fare including pizza and gelato made in house. There is a lot of patio seating that is covered and they also have the same lovely red fleece blankets that match their cute italian checkered table cloths.
The Pint Public House
The Pint Public House is new to Halifax and has two incredible patios on Argyle Street. The rooftop patio has umbrellas but the one at street level has roof heaters to keep you warm on the coldest of Halifax nights! If you’re looking for great pub food it’s the place to be!
The Bitter End
If you’re looking for a great martini and fabulous appetizers then The Bitter End is the place to go. It’s the perfect place to have a drink before a night out with the girls or a play at Neptune Theatre or you just want to be right in the middle of the action people watching on Argyle Street!
Don’t miss their long happy hour from 4-8 when they have great prices on appetizers and drinks. We tried the Mac and Cheese Balls, Poutine Flatbread and Pineapple Prosciutto Nachos and they were all delicious.
Waterfront Warehouse
Technically the Waterfront Warehouse doesn’t have a covered patio, blankets or more than one heater but it’s a huge restaurant right on the waterfront at that has a huge interior so, it’s pretty easy to start out on the patio and move indoors if the weather gets really nasty. It’s also a great spot to people watch, especially during Buskers as it’s right in the middle of the action on the board walk at Cable Wharf. I really enjoyed their coconut shrimp.
