When I was little I used to know everyone in my neighbourhood. But my neighbourhood was only my school, church and the block around my house. That was my community.
When I went to high school my community expanded again and we took in an exchange student from Spain. I learned that your community can expand to friends and family all over the world and that they can mean as much to us as people we’ve known all our lives.
Once I went to university I felt that my community was pretty huge, but it wasn’t until I started blogging that I really understood what community means.
It wasn’t until I started making a lot of friends online that I realized my community was limitless, that I could consider the whole world my community and everyone in it someone I could relate to, in one way or another.
Then I began to learn more and more about how vulnerable we all really are on the inside and how much we really need each other. I learned how to rely on others in my community and ask for help when I need it.
I learned that we can have many different types of communities and they are all important to us in different ways.
What does community mean to you? Is it your neighbourhood? Your school? Your Facebook friends? Do you think we’re better off with a bigger community or small close knit one?

“Then I began to learn more and more about how vulnerable we all really are on the inside and how much we really need each other.” This is such an important lesson.
I think we each have an expanding community. It starts in the middle with ourselves and expands out to our closest inner circle, then our neighbors and acquaintances and on and on to include the world. Each circle holds it own value and importance.
