When you’re a Canadian one of your first thoughts when planning a trip to the United States is “How do I use my cell phone down there?” Staying connected to family and friends while travelling is very important and it get’s even more complicated the longer you plan on staying in the United States.
We have so little competition in Canada that most cell phone companies still charge outrageous fees for using your phone while in the United States. Travel packages or a daily fee are available but are often so outrageous you can end up paying hundreds of dollars in fees if you’re not careful.
Many people have resorted to buying a pay as you go phone while in the United States but those fees are still very high and in US currency so with the exchange rate it’s still very expensive to use.
This was becoming a HUGE concern for our four month long road trip.
We NEEDED to be able to have data for work and to post on social media and a good phone/text plan for staying in touch with family and friends.
I was so excited when I started researching how we were going to figure out this problem and came upon the company Roam Mobility. A Canadian based cell phone provider, they focus solely on helping people who travel to the United States by providing US sim cards and a daily or monthly plan that’s flexible and, best of all, in Canadian dollars. Since we’re going to be in the United States for more than a couple of months we decided to go with one of their Snowbird plans.
For $49.95 a month we get data and unlimited calls/texts to and from the US and Canada.
In fact it was so affordable we decided to get a second phone.
This way our kids can have one to contact their friends and in case they are on their own during our trip.
There are also daily plans available if you’re only going for a couple of weeks.
First you’ll need to set up an account and have the SIM card sent to you in the mail. Make sure you do this a few weeks before travelling.
Once you receive your SIM card in the mail, log in to your account and choose the plan that works best for you. Then insert your SIM card into your unlocked phone. It’s that easy! Not sure if your phone is unlocked? Effective December 1, 2017, all new phones sold in Canada come pre-unlocked, and carriers must unlock older devices for free!
You can extend your plan if you want on the road if you run out of data or end up traveling for longer and you can use your SIM card on future trips.
WAIT DON’T GO! Roam Mobility has offered up a prize package so you can try their services on your next trip to the United States! Just enter using the Rafflecopter form below. Contest ends on November 8th at midnight AST and the prize package includes two (2) USA Travel SIM cards, two (2) SIM card holders, and two (2) 7-day Talk+Text+Data plans. Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Roam Mobility. They have provided us with cell phone coverage in exchange for writing this post, however, all opinions in this post are my own.

yes I worry very much, but I know most providers have plans you can get but I hate paying more than what I currently do
