In October I had the opportunity to try a 21 day cleanse from Anna at The Fitness Room. I was wary because I’ve tried so many healthy eating plans in the past and haven’t stuck to any of them. I am SO GOOD AT MAKING EXCUSES! “I’ll just have one bowl of ice cream or one chocolate. I ate so good today!”
I really didn’t think I would be able to eat completely healthy for 21 days straight!!
I downloaded the program, shopping list, recipes and bought the food. I was ready! In the body reset program we go:
- Dairy Free
- Gluten Free
- Alcohol Free
- Processed Sugar Free
- GMO Soy product Free (organic Soy products only)
- Canola Free
- Inflammatory oil Free
- Factory farmed animal protein Free when possible
During the first three days we only ate smoothies, salads and some healthy snacks. We drank lemon water in the morning (this feels so good!) I never felt hungry. I feel like I succeeded because the body reset allows you to have substitutions. I was allowed to have my coffee as long as I only put coconut milk in it and no cream. To me this made all the difference in the world. I’m ok with no sugar, but eliminating everything including coffee is just too much for me. This is only one of the reasons why this body reset worked so well for me. It’s more about forming new habits that you can actually keep doing rather than a short term thing you can’t carry on with.
If you stick with the plan you will definitely reduce your cravings for sugar, dairy, meat and bread. You also get SO FULL from the smoothies and salads that you don’t want all that extra filler. In fact one of my biggest surprises was how full I could actually feel after eating a salad. (With the right ingredients of course! I load mine up with spinach, nuts, fruit, seeds and other veggies!)
I wasn’t allowed added sugars, dairy, bread, or meat for the first week. I loved the smoothie and salad recipes and slowly got used to needing to buy a LOT MORE VEGGIES AND FRUIT. I mean a lot more. I can’t believe it but after doing this cleanse and getting my family to also change some of their habits we’re going through 3 Costco size boxes of spinach, 2 bags of lemons, and 2 bunches of bananas a week! We’re also down to eating meat only a couple of nights a week. We substitute with a lot of nuts, seeds, beans and alternative meat products.
I feel great. I crave less sugar and really don’t enjoy bread and cheese like I used to. I actually crave salads. I never thought this would happen! After the first week we added some local chicken and fish back into our meal plans but kept up with the smoothies and mostly salads for lunch simply because we loved them so much. We also added in soups, balance bowls and some other really yummy recipes!
I’ve always thought that eating healthy took a LOT of time to prepare meals and I even had a mental block against preparing salads. After doing it daily for three weeks it became an easy habit, as did morning smoothies and lemon water.
I honestly can’t believe I thought it was difficult to make a salad for lunch! The trick really is building new habits and having the right ingredients ALWAYS available so it’s easy. Now I always order groceries the moment I know I’m running out of something even if I’m only picking up lemons so I don’t get off track. Now don’t get me wrong – I wasn’t perfect for 21 days straight. I definitely had a glass of wine or two at a wedding in the middle! BUT I’m really happy with my results from this cleanse and how well I actually did do.
I know for a fact that this 21 day cleanse really changed my life, because it helped me to add some really amazing (healthy) habits to my every day lifestyle. I’m really hoping that this means I have a greater chance of eating healthy for longer and keeping these new healthy eating habits for life!
Disclosure: Anna gave me the 21 day cleanse program for free so that I could test it out and write this blog post. All opinions in this post are my own.
