Planning a road trip now that warmer weather is here? Just driving to Grandma’s house? You’re going to want to keep those kiddies occupied and happy if you want to have a peaceful, enjoyable trip. When we plan a road trip we always bring movies, video games and books but here’s what else I did on our last road trip to make it more fun for our children. This would work great for flights too!

I planned ahead of time and started buying small children’s toys, games and treats when I saw them on sale. I bought things at the Dollar Store, Michael’s Craft Store, on Ebay and even at Thrift Stores to keep it affordable.

Then before the trip I looked at our maps and where we would be during each day and planned out locations I thought would make good spots to give the gifts to them. This changed during the trip as sometimes they needed a distraction sooner if we were stuck in traffic or there wasn’t anything to look at outside.

I packaged all of the gifts up in paper bags, and put them in a Tupperware, for the road. It was a huge success, with our oldest daughter even learning how to read a map, so she could figure out how far it was until the next present. It saved our road trip on more than one occasion and even saved us money on souvenirs when all they wanted was their next road trip present! During the trip I bought a few small souvenirs to add to the bags for on the way home.

What are your ideas for keeping everyone happy during road trips?
