I absolutely love having fun at workshops, where I get to learn something new and get my hands dirty. Recently, ECM Media hosted a flower & photography workshop at Dean’s Flowers in Halifax!
It was so much fun!! If you’re local to Halifax you should REALLY consider taking a flower workshop at Dean’s if you like flowers and having them around your home. Not only do you get to learn something new but you get a wonderful display to take home with you!
We started out by learning how to tape the glass flower holder. I’m sure there’s a better name for it but I didn’t catch what it was. Then we picked out our flowers, learned how to trim them and how long they should be to sit in the vase perfectly to hold a nice round shape. Holly made it seem very easy to make a beautiful display.
Holly really went all out with her display. We had so many beautiful flowers to choose from!
After finishing our unique flower arrangements, Matt Corkum from Fade to White Photography gave us a talk on how to light our arrangements and other things we might be photographing to get the best possible pictures for our blogs. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to use the simplest materials to make my pictures look better!
He taught us that a simple white bristol board could be used as a light bounce to light the side of the item you’re photographing equally. He also taught us to take our pictures from further away so as to remove any shadows from ourselves and to remove any unnecessary items from the background. It all seems very simple but the most obvious things are often the ones you forget!
I also want to give a huge shoutout to FujiFilm Canada, who sponsored our workshop and gave us a SP-2 printer to give away to one of our bloggers. Have you heard of this printer yet? It’s a small portable printer that allows you to print from your smart phone. It’s so cool and perfect for travelling, weddings and fun events!
