The last time I visited the San Diego Zoo was when I was about 20 years old and my mom and I took a girls only trip to California. I remember it as being one of the most incredible zoos I’d ever visited. It seemed even better this time because they added some incredible new displays and I had so much fun seeing my kids enjoy the animals! It was a must see stop on our cross America road trip!
The cutest animal we saw was definitely the baby koala, or joey! Usually it’s really hard to see new babies up close so we were very grateful when a zoo-keeper brought this joey over to us so we could see it closer. It kept trying to give her a kiss! It might not look like a baby but if I’m remembering right this joey was only 6 months old!
Did you know: Koalas aren’t actually bears? They’re called marsupials and their family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, wombats, possums, and opossums. They love to eat eucalyptus and even though eucalyptus leaves are poisonous to most animals, koalas have special bacteria in their digestive tract that break down the toxic compounds.
We were also really lucky that the zoo’s Orchid House was open to the public while we were there. It’s only open to the public approximately once a month and it was absolutely stunning.
I’ve never seen so many different types or orchids and air plants. The air inside the Orchid House smelled so fresh it felt like being in the middle of a huge forest.
We saw a lot of cool animals we’ve never seen at any other zoo and the flamingos were hilarious!
We would definitely recommend this zoo to anyone visiting San Diego and the next time we visit we’ll be checking out their Safari Park which looks totally amazing!
